Hairspray

About the Show

Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager in 1962 Baltimore who dreams of dancing on the Corny Collins Show. When her dream becomes a reality, she uses her newfound fame to fight for racial integration on the show. Hairspray offers a profound commentary on issues of racial segregation and equality, body image, and social acceptance in America.

Shaiman and Wittman's high-energy score reflects the energy of early '60s rock and roll and rhythm-and-blues vibe, including songs such as “Good Morning Baltimore,” “I Can Hear the Bells”, “I Know Where I’ve Been,” and the finale, “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” Hairspray debuted on Broadway in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
