Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar

About the Show

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar reimagines the final week of Jesus’ life through a modern, humanized lens. Originally released as a concept album in 1970, it opened on Broadway in 1971. The musical's fusion of rock, gospel, and funk with theatrical storytelling expanded the stylistic possibilities of stage musicals and was an experiment in new ways of developing theatre.

The show features iconic songs including "Superstar," Judas’s energetic critique of Jesus's growing fame, and “Everything’s Alright,” a heartfelt lullaby in 5/4 time sung by Mary Magdalene. Other highlights include “King Herod’s Song,” Jesus' emotional solo "Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)," and Judas' conflicted "Heaven on Their Minds." Since the release of the original album, Jesus Christ Superstar has been produced several times on Broadway, adapted into films, and toured around the world.
