About the Show

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows six quirky students competing in a local spelling bee, revealing their insecurities, odd habits, and family pressures. During every performance, a few audience members are invited on stage to spell alongside the cast, which adds a fun element of spontaneity.

Originally created as an improvised play by Rebecca Feldman, Spelling Bee was developed into a scripted, full-length musical with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. Spelling Bee opened on Broadway in 2005 and won multiple Tony Awards. Due in part to its minimal set and modest cast size, it remains a popular choice for a wide range of theatre companies.

About the Programming

The vast majority of sounds used in the Spelling Bee Synthesizer book come from the Roland XV-5080 sound module and its expansion boards, including popular patches like Huff N Stuff, West Coast, Childlike, and Gospel Spin. We've worked tirelessly to carefully recreate nearly 60 of these iconic sounds in MainStage directly from the XV-5080. As such, we're proud to provide programming that faithfully represents the intent of the authors and original creative team.

Please note that the Synthesizer book plays the acoustic and electric bass parts. If your audio system can accommodate it, our programming is already prepared to easily route these bass instruments on different channels so they can be mixed separately from the rest of the keyboard book.
